57 This multiple-trunked, small, deciduous flowering tree of great beauty has purple/pinkish flowers, but comes in many other colors ranging from white to purple. It has graced gardens from earliest times and seeds may have been brought to Europe from the Orient by Marco Polo. One of the first Old World ornamentals planted in colonial gardens, some of these are still alive at the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia.
