       Her paintings are vivid abstractions with compelling use of line, exploration of shape, and expressive use of texture and color. Nicole Royse' inspiration? Often the shapes and colors which are familiar to people who enjoy the gardens, trails, plants and flowers here at Boyce Thompson Arboretum.        "My visits to the Arboretum are always so exciting and inspiring. Being able to hike through the gardens and being with nature provides me with so many wonderful colors, textures, and images to incorporate into my work. I enjoy the energy of the Hummingbird-Butterfly Garden and the aromas of the culinary and medicinal herbs you find in the Wing Memorial garden."

      "Whenever I am able to immerse myself within nature and take in all of its wonders I am able to produce my interpretation of the Sonoran Desert while still expressing the beautiful colors and variety of nature. Most of my paintings revolve around the Arizona landscape and plant life and I will being showing a variety of this work at the Arboretum during September. To be able to share my work at the Arboretum where people can explore the beauty of Arizona first hand is truly a wonderful opportunity and experience for myself and visitors."

       Her paintings are primarily acrylic paint on canvas; vivid images which engage the viewer's senses through expressive layering of paint and colors.

        "Enlargement of forms and exaggeration of brushstrokes are the methods I use to create a level of abstraction that is meditative in its simplicity," said Royse.

The Tempe resident is a self-taught artist who earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Art History. Royse was born in Las Vegas and spent most of her life between Orange County, California and Arizona. She earned a degree in art history and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University in 2006. Recent exhibitions have included solo shows at Su Vino Winery in Scottsdale, Coconino Arts Center in Flagstaff, ASU's Gammage Auditorium and also Mercado Galleria; Scottsdale Civic Center Library, Changing Hands Bookstore and several private galleries.

      "I began exploring the mediums of art at a young age. I found a connection with painting, which helped me to express myself. My paintings draw on the natural world that we encounter every day, particularly flowers, as well as the Arizona landscape. Each work explores and rediscovers the complexities of the natural world. I am continuously experimenting with new mediums and ideas, which is reflected in the uniqueness of each piece I create. My work ranges from semi- realistic to abstract to non-objective. I am drawn to and inspired by color, shape, and texture found in the natural world."

         Boyce Thompson Arboretum is located at Highway 60 milepost #223, just three miles west of the town of Superior - a drive of about one hour east of Phoenix or two hours from Tucson (take Oracle Road North to Highway 79 past Florence to Highway 60, then East for another 12 miles). Monthly exhibits may be seen in our Visitor Center gallery daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from September-through-April. Summer hours during May/June/July/August are 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Arboretum is an Arizona State Park and daily admission must be paid to enter the Visitor Center where the gallery is found. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $3 for ages 5-12. Annual memberships at the Arboretum begin at $45, and include a year's access, guest passes for your friends and family, along with many other benefits.
