Hints to Scientific Writing:
    Overuse of the word 'Significant'

One of the most common examples of wordiness is found in the use of the word 'significant' (or its derivatives such as significantly).  In scientific writing, if the author mentions that a difference occurs between two groups then the reader ASSUMES that the difference IS SIGNIFICANT.  If no difference is said to occur then the assumption is that no significant difference exists.  The statistical data to support these claims can and should be given parenthetically or in a table.  As a result, the author needn't add words to emphasis that something is 'significantly different'.
