Hints to Scientific Writing: the Title

The title is a very important part of a scientific paper.  With the proliferation of scientific literature available, no one is able to read everything in print.  The title is the primary piece of information used in the initial screening of published literature.  As a result, a good title attracts the appropriate people while a poor title leads to poor dissemination of your hard work and well-formed thoughts.  Titles should be relatively short and contain enough information so that reader can ascertain whether they should continue on to the abstract.  A title that is too general (e.g. Deer Movements) will overlooked by many as will an overly specific title (e.g. Diel movements of lawn deer (Odocoileus ornamentis) found in 6 western Oregon counties (Polk, Marion, Multnomah, Linn, Benton, Lane) as determined by radiotelemetry and observation during winter and summer).
