An Exciting Opportunity to Foster New Research Innovations Amongst CALS Faculty
When: May 15th and 16th, 2014

Who should attend? Any and all CALS Faculty
1:30 Opening Introduction – Shane Burgess and DRAC
2:30-3:30 Research Snapshots* – ½ of the faculty participants
3:30-5:00 Poster session**/Mixer/Light Snacks
5:00-6:00 Lecture – Jonathan Overpeck – “The value of interdisciplinary research”
6:00 and beyond – On your own
9:00 - Opening Introduction – Parker Antin and DRAC
9:30-10:30 Research Snapshots* – ½ of the faculty participants
10:30-12:00 Poster session**
1:30–3:30 CALS Research Innovation Challenge***/CALS Research Innovation Think Tank****
3:30-4:00 Submit letters of intent online (i.e. PI names, title, 3 sentence summary), Wrap up.

*Research Snapshots– One slide (2.5 minutes, strictly enforced!) summarizing your research and the grand challenge question(s) you are trying to address.
**Poster session from Research Snapshot Presenters
Option 1) Bring a poster that highlights recent research innovations/themes you are pursuing in your lab.
Option 2) Create your own poster de novo describing a research nugget you are excited about and want to pursue.
***Research Innovation Challenge (RIC) [aka – “research speed dating”]
After participating in the Research Snapshots/Poster Sessions attendees will form teams of three PIs that have never shared a funded grant before and have primary appointments in different units. Each team will come up with an idea for an interdisciplinary research project and will have one week to submit a 3 page pre-proposal (May 23rd @ 5pm) that will be peer-reviewed by an expert panel (DRAC and non-CALS UA faculty). After the reviews, the top three proposals will be awarded $9,000 each to be used as the team wishes to generate preliminary data that can be used to develop a full proposal to be submitted to an external funding source within 1 year.
****Research Innovation Think Tank (RITT)
For faculty not participating in RIC a Think Tank session will be held to explore research innovation needs within CALS that would include ideas for training grants, shared instrumentation, cluster faculty hires etc.
