Kinship Kare of Northern Arizona (KKONA) is a program of the University of Arizona Coconino County Cooperative Extension with funding provided by the Northern Arizona Council of Governments (NACOG), the University of Western Michigan and the Casey Foundation.
KKONA is a grassroots organization that began in July 2002 to assist families raising relatives’ children. Support is provided through education, advocacy and collaboration. KKONA is a resource for families to achieve self-sufficiency and health.
According to the 2000 census, Arizona had a 73.8% increase in grandparent headed households since 1990. Coconino County has at least 1,700 grandparent headed households and the City of Flagstaff has at least 427 grandparent headed households. KKONA currently assists families in Coconino, Yavapai and Navajo county in Northern Arizona.
KKONA offers many services to the community including monthly discussion groups, a bi-monthly newsletter, educational workshops, agency referrals and quarterly familiy activities and outings. KKONA also has resource materials avaliable on a wide variety of topics such as parenting, mental health, discipline and supporting children in school.
KKONA also provides a voice in the community for kinship caregivers and families by participating in various task forces and groups such as the Children of Incarcerated Parents Task Force and the planning committee for the upcoming Statewide Kinship University.
