University of the Philippines at Los Banos Honors Cuello

Joel Cuello, professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering, was honored by his alma mater, the University of the Philippines at Los Banos (UPLB), with a 2013 Outstanding Alumnus Award. He was selected for this recognition by the UPLB Alumni Association in honor of his contribution to community transformation and nation building. Cuello traveled to the Philippines to receive the award at a ceremony held October 9 during homecoming festivities.

Cuello was also recognized by the UPLB College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology with a 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Award.

He graduated from UPLB in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree of science in agricultural engineering.

A citation reads as follows:

Global Biosystems Engineering Education and Research

For his technical expertise and outstanding contributions in both engineering and biology which helped promote the application of engineering design in various agricultural and biological systems, with emphasis on optimizing biological and agricultural productivity while fostering resource sustainability.

For his contributions in global engineering education: as a Professor of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering & Director of the Global Institute for Strategic Agriculture in Dry Lands (GISAD) at The University of Arizona, USA.; as a lifetime Visiting Professor at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China; as a Faculty Fellow at the Innovation Center of the Ateneo de Manila University; and as a valuable resource person in redesigning the UPLB-CEAT Agricultural Engineering to the current Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering curricular program.
