Presentation 6

Recreation on Federal Lands

Carl Taylor

Recreation, Wilderness, Trails, Heritage and Lands Staff, Tonto National Forest, 2324 East McDowell Road, Phoenix, Arizona 85006

Arizona is growing in population at a rate of two acres per hour, converting desert to town. The Tonto National Forest, just outside of Phoenix is the most visited National Forest in the Nation. This presentation will discuss and picture some of the impacts from recreation and how we respond in trying to manage those impacts to the resource base. The Tonto National Forest has invested 50 million dollars over the last 10 years trying to get on top of the "recreation ghetto." The federal government is experimenting with new laws that allow fees to be collected and reinvested in the spot they were collected.
