Focus: Basic elements of soils, plant growth, and the role of water

Core Competencies:

  • Understand and describe photosynthesis and respiration
  • Understand and describe mechanisms that plants use to regulate water use
  • Describe how water moves through soils and plants
  • Explain how soil texture and structure affects water movement, infiltration rate and water holding capacity
  • Categorize basic soil textures and identify simple means to determine a soil texture
  • Understand how the chemical and physical structure of soils affect plant growth
