Soils, Plants & Water – Provides basic understanding of the dynamic relationships of soils, plants, and water and is the foundation course of the Smartscape Series. Instruction focuses on soil texture and structure and how it affects water movement, infiltration rates and water holding capacity. Mechanisms that plants use to regulate water use are also discussed.

Desert Adapted Plants – This class identifies many of Tucson’s common desert landscape plants and provides basic discussion of their traits that make them suitable for the urban and suburban landscape. Specific characteristics such as flower color, seasonality, size, and hardiness, as well as maintenance specifications and other considerations are also presented.

Landscape Design and Renovation – This class provides information about the principles and concepts of designing and installing a landscape. Special attention is given to Xeriscape landscaping and renovating an existing landscape from high-water use to low-water use.

Maintaining Desert Adapted Plants @ Pima County Natural Resources Parks & Recreation

Maintaining Desert Adapted Plants – Divides desert-plant maintenance into two categories – pruning and fertilizing. All pruning instruction is based on International Society of Arboriculture guidelines and uses pictorial slides and actual samples to illustrate the speaker’s main points. The fertilizing portion of the workshop focuses on plant needs for macro- and micronutrients, determining correct fertilizers to use and calculating the appropriate quantities of fertilizers to purchase and apply.

Do you want to design or renovate your landscape?  Need some direction about how to start the process or information about plants and maintenance?  The purpose of this series is to provide a method to produce a landscape design for any area in a format which can be implemented as time and budget allow.  You will create your own design on paper for your space.

Supplies needed to complete your project include:
11 x 17 graph paper ¼” or 1/8″ grid
3 7/8″ – 7 1/4″ Circle Template
45 degree triangle
All purpose eraser
Graphic pencils (hard)

Landscape Designer Roger Putney has designed well over 2,000 landscapes for Tucson residents over the past 20+ years.  He started out in the landscape maintenance business and, after trying to maintain landscapes that weren’t working (in so many ways!), decided to earn a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona.  He continues to work in the nursery business and to assist customers with achieving their desired look while having success with their plants.  He has extensive first-hand knowledge and experience in every aspect – from designing and installing to maintaining landscapes in our desert environment.

Class size is very limited (and there is high demand), so please register only if you are certain that you are able to attend all three classes! Registering for any class signs you up for all three.

Smartscape: A Training Program for Landscape Professionals™ consists of nine classes taught by University of Arizona faculty and local business professionals.  They provide informative, research-based instruction designed to promote best landscape management practices for the urban Sonoran Desert. This FREE series is designed for landscape professionals who are responsible for the health and beauty of landscapes in their care. For example: Landscape Installation & Maintenance, Irrigation, Pest & Weed Control, Designers/Architects, Nursery, HOA/Neighborhood Association Representatives, Property Managers, Groundskeepers for Schools/Parks, Multi-Family, Commercial, and Municipal. Students are also welcome!

Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays (9 days total)

Time: 3:30 p.m.* – 6:00 p.m.

*1st class begins at 3:00 for Orientation
