(March 2011)

Jessica Franco, a sophomore in our lab, was selected to receive an Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) fellowship from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to do summer research. Jessica will be working this summer in Dr. Joseph L. DeRisi lab at the University of California in San Francisco (Lab website: http://derisilab.ucsf.edu/).

From 147 nation-wide applicants, Jessica was one of the 80 students who was recently awarded this fellowship. The objective of EXROP is to increase the diversity of the science professoriate by motivating well-prepared students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Congratulations Jessica!

Initiated in 2003, the Exceptional Research Opportunities Program (EXROP) links the resources of HHMI's Science and Grants programs to provide selected undergraduate students with outstanding summer research experiences that encourage them to pursue careers in academic science.

EXROP students also attend meetings at HHMI headquarters where they present their research in a poster session, network with their peers and HHMI scientists, and hear from scientists from various backgrounds and stages in their careers.

Additional information about EXRPO program can be found here.
