Turn your passion for the environment into a career of impactful action based on hard science.

The B.S. in Environmental Science equips you with the training you need to pursue an in-demand career solving environmental challenges during a time of rapid ecological change. With four degree emphases to choose from, you can customize your learning experience to your interests, integrating coursework, research and internships.

Students in the environmental science major can choose one of four emphases:

Leadership, Sustainability and Communication: Become a powerful advocate for our environment.

Soil, Air and Water: Solve the biggest resource-based challenges facing our planet.

Physical and Chemical Dynamics: Develop engineered solutions to environmental problems.

The Biosphere: Use cutting-edge techniques to study and protect our diverse ecosystem.

The College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences offers $1 million in scholarships to our students! Combine these options with university scholarships and support from privately funded scholarships and you're well on your way to achieving your educational goals at a price you can afford.

Students in the Department of Environmental Science have exclusive access to nearly $15,000 program-specific scholarships, awarded from 5 different scholarships -- in addition to $230,000 in scholarships that are available to all or most CALES students.

A degree in environmental science prepares you for careers in natural sciences, human health and sustainability. It also can serve as a springboard for graduate school. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for careers related to environmental scientists and specialists was $76,480 per year with a 6% faster than average job growth overall (2022).

Although your career possibilities are limitless, here are some example career paths our students follow:

  • Conservation Scientistsconservation scientists and foresters manage the land quality of forests, parks, rangelands, and other natural resources.
  • Hydrologists: hydrologists study how water moves across and through the Earth’s crust.
